SoWell Health

The Project

SoWell Health is a pioneering startup in the home health space. Their home test kits help customers understand their metabolic health -- not just by spitting out obscure numbers, but by providing a personalized experience that carefully explains what their readings mean and how they relate to their health. We designed and built the lab results portal for SoWell, a beautiful and engaging interface that makes it clear to patients what their numbers mean. Behind the scenes we built a powerfully flexible engine that can support multiple types of test kits and markers.

Challenges

Presenting medical information is a challenge in any setting, but especially in a consumer setting where the user is on their own to decipher a list of metrics with far-reaching implications for their metabolic health. Our mission was to take that complex information and build an experience that actually made sense to customers with little-to-no medical experience.

Solutions

Our experience at data visualization and building complex dashboards paid off, as we were able to simplify the content of each user's test results into clear, easy-to-digest graphics. By providing additional explainer text, we give users an opportunity to learn more about the underlying medical facts -- without initially overwhelming them with an indecipherable wall of text. Using video content helps make the experience feel more personal, and interactive components for determining how factors like body weight affect outcomes give the user control over what content they see. Tech-wise our goal was to build a platform that could easily scale to any number of future test kits, and the processing engine we built to power the dashboard is designed to scale up.

Results

The result was a beautiful dashboard that helps each user understand their own unique test results and how the various numbers combine to measure their metabolic health. With personalized suggestions based on their results, users get a unique experience created specifically for them -- and with graphics that track their results across multiple test kits, the client gets increased lifetime value by generating recurring sales.

What we learned

In this project we were responsible for every aspect of product development -- from brainstorming the features of the dashboard, to design, all the way through to implementation and maintenance. We build tech designed to grow along with our clients, and so we worked hand in hand with SoWell to understand the future direction of the platform so that we could architect the product in ways that would accelerate, not hinder, their growth.
